Best Time to Go Fishing in Punta Cana
Learn the best months to fish in Punta Cana by species. Whether you're targeting marlin, mahi-mahi, wahoo, or tuna, timing your trip right makes all the difference.
Punta Cana offers year-round fishing, but some months are better than others depending on what you want to catch. The good news is that there is always something biting in these waters. Here is a month-by-month guide to help you plan the perfect fishing trip.
Year-Round Fishing in Punta Cana
Thanks to the warm Caribbean waters, Punta Cana offers excellent fishing 12 months a year. The average water temperature stays between 78°F and 84°F, creating ideal conditions for a wide range of species. While some fish have peak seasons, you can expect action on every trip regardless of when you visit.
Peak Season: December to April
This is prime time for Blue Marlin, White Marlin, and Sailfish. The water currents bring nutrient-rich waters closer to shore, attracting big game fish. Mahi-Mahi are plentiful from November through May. Wahoo season peaks from November through April. This is also the busiest tourist season, so booking in advance is recommended.
Summer Months: May to August
Summer offers excellent fishing with fewer crowds. Yellowfin Tuna are abundant year-round but particularly active during summer. Mahi-Mahi remain strong through May. The weather is warm and seas are generally calm, making it a great time for families and beginners.
